Calling all ghosts, goblins, and fairies it's that time of the year again and things are about to get spooky! Halloween is always a night of fun and fright, however, it's important to be extra cautious when it comes to keeping your little monsters safe.
Be Visible
Brightly colored Halloween costumes and the use of flashlights can help you be more visible to oncoming vehicles. Reflective tape can also be applied to your child’s trick or treat bag to help make them more noticeable.
Driving
When driving on Halloween night it’s important to take extra precautions. If you have to drive through a neighborhood, drive much slower than usual and watch for kids that may be running around without looking. Also, remember to enter and exit driveways slowly and eliminate any distractions inside your car so you can focus on driving.
Adult Supervision
Grab some friends and make an evening of your trick or treating fun! Besides, trick or treating is always safer (and more fun) when you have other people to enjoy it with.
Porch Lights
Remember to tell your kids to only approach the houses that have porch lights on and never enter the home of a stranger.
Costumes
Make sure your child’s Halloween costume fits correctly in order to prevent unnecessary trips, slips, and falls! If possible, opt for using face paint rather than masks so your child’s vision is not obstructed.
Sidewalks
Halloween is exciting and often times you see kids running from door to door in the mad dash for candy. Remind your kiddos to stick to walking on well-lit sidewalks this Halloween, and for those places without sidewalks, remember to walk on the far edge of the road facing the direction of traffic. Avoid walking across yards and through alleyways, and never assume you have the right away because motorists may have difficulty seeing Trick-or-Treaters.
Check Candy
Always remember to check your child’s candy for any choking hazards, or pieces of candy that may be tampered with. Throw away any candy that is not properly sealed and avoid accepting homemade treats from strangers.
